The ingredients needed to make a traditional Mai Tai cocktail include rum, simple syrup, almond syrup, orange curacao and fresh lime juice. There are also other variations of the Mai Tai such as mango Mai Tai, which utilizes dark and mango rum and fruit juices to make a sweeter drink.
To make a traditional Mai Tai, add 3/4 of an ounce of fresh lime juice, 1/4 ounce each simple syrup and almond syrup, 1/2 ounce of orange curacao and 2 ounces of rum to a shaker. Fill the remainder of the shaker with ice, and shake until frost appears on the outside of the shaker. Pour the drink into a double old-fashioned glass, and garnish it with lime and mint, if desired.
A twist on the traditional Mai Tai is the mango Mai Tai. To make the drink, combine 1 ounce each dark rum, mango rum and amaretto liqueur in a shaker with 2 ounces orange juice, 2 ounces mango juice and 2 ounces pineapple juice. Fill the rest of the shaker with ice, and shake vigorously. Pour the drinks into two rocks glasses, and add a dash of grenadine syrup to each drink for color. This recipe makes two 8-ounce mango Mai Tais.
