Make the Food Network's lemon cake by beating 1/2 pound of softened unsalted butter and 2 cups of granulated sugar until the mixture becomes fluffy. Beat in 4 eggs and 1/3 cup of grated lemon zest. Sift together 3 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. In a separate bowl, combine 3/4 cup of buttermilk, 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract and 1/4 cup of lemon juice. Add the wet and dry mixtures into the butter and sugar batter, mixing constantly. Pour the batter into 2 greased and floured loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 45 to 60 minutes.
While the cake bakes, combine 1/2 cup of granulated sugar and 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Heat in a saucepan until a lemon syrup forms, and remove from heat.
