A highly rated recipe for Native American bannock, or frybread, includes flour, salt, baking powder, butter and water. This recipe calls for 10 minutes of preparation time and 30 minutes of cooking time.
To make bannock bread in the oven, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Next, mix three cups of all-purpose flour, a teaspoon of salt and two tablespoons of baking powder in a bowl. Pour 1/4 cup of melted butter and 1 1/2 cups of water over the dry ingredient mixture. Stir the dough with a fork to form it into a ball.
Lightly flour a flat surface such as a clean countertop or a large cutting board. Knead the dough gently 10 times, then pat it into a flat circle that is between 3/4-inch to 1-inch thick. Place the dough on a greased baking sheet and bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
The same bannock bread dough can also be cooked in a greased frying pan over medium heat. Fry the dough for 15 minutes on each side, using two forks or other grasping devices to turn the dough by holding both sides. For variation, add raisins, blueberries or other fruit to the bannock bread dough prior to cooking.
