A recipe for homemade sausage gravy can be made with hot or mild breakfast sausage, flour, milk and seasonings. This recipe takes about 45 minutes to prepare and serves 12 people.
To make the sausage gravy, tear apart 1 pound of breakfast sausage into tiny chunks, and spread them out evenly into a large skillet. Over medium-high heat, cook the sausage until it is completely brown with no pink left. Turn the heat to medium-low, and add about half of 1/3 cup all-purpose flour to the sausage, cooking it until the sausage soaks all the flourup. Continue adding the rest of the flour in small increments. Cook for about one minute, and add 3 cups of milk.
Cook this mixture for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring often, until it starts to thicken. Add in 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt and 2 teaspoons pepper, and keep cooking until the gravy gets even thicker. If the gravy gets too thick, pour in an additional 1/2 cup of milk or more until the gravy reaches your desired consistency. Taste the gravy, and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Pour the gravy over warm biscuits, and serve immediately. For more servings, this recipe can easily be doubled.
