A recipe for meatball appetizers uses barbecue sauce, grape jelly and meatballs. Prepare the meatballs ahead of time or use frozen prepared ones. The recipe requires about 3 1/2 hours cooking time and serves eight to 10 people.
Prepare the meatballs by combining 1 pound of ground beef, 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup minced onion and 1/4 cup of milk. Season the meatballs with 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of pepper and 1/2 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce. Brown the meatballs in cooking oil in a frying pan. If short on time, substitute 2 pounds of frozen meatballs.
Combine one 18-ounce bottle of barbecue sauce with 2 1/2 cups of grape jelly in the slow cooker. Add the meatballs and stir to distribute the sauce. Place the lid on the slow cooker and set the dial to high. After 2 hours, open the lid and stir the contents of the pot. Cover again and cook the meatballs an additional 1 1/2 hours.
Check to ensure the sauce is simmering and the meatballs are hot in the center before serving. Reduce the temperature to low or keep warm until ready to serve.
For holiday parties, substitute a 14-ounce can of whole berry cranberry sauce and a 12-ounce jar of chili sauce for the grape jelly and barbecue sauce.
