A good recipe for creamed onions is The Food Network’s Creamed Pearl Onions by Tyler Florence. Taste of Home offers an additional good creamed onions recipe. Both recipes are simple to make and have positive ratings.
To make Creamed Pearl Onions, thaw 1 bag frozen pearl onions and sauté the onions in 1 tablespoon unsalted butter until golden brown. Add a little water at a time to deglaze. Add ½ cup heavy cream and let it reduce until the mixture has a smooth consistency. Season to taste with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper; serve right away. This recipe takes about 16 minutes to make and makes four to six servings.
For Taste of Home’s recipe, sauté 6 large sliced onions in 1 cup butter until tender and golden brown, approximately 25 minutes. Remove onions from pan with a slotted spoon. Add 2 teaspoons all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons salt and ½ teaspoon white pepper to skillet. Stir until smooth, and gradually blend in 2 cups milk.
Bring to a boil, cooking and stirring for 2 minutes or until mixture is thickened. Turn heat down to medium. Add onions back to pan and heat through. It takes about 40 minutes to make this eight-to-10-serving recipe.
