To make baked macaroni casserole, start by cooking 1/2 pound of elbow macaroni in salted water until al dente, and drain. In another pot, melt 3 tablespoons butter before mixing in 3 tablespoons flour and 1 tablespoon powdered mustard for five minutes. Stirring continuously, add 3 cups milk, 1/2 cup diced yellow onion, 1/2 teaspoon paprika and 1 bay leaf. After 10 minutes, temper in the egg, and add 9 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese.
Add the macaroni to the mixture, and pour in a casserole dish. Sprinkle with 3 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese and 1 cup panko bread crumbs tossed with 3 tablespoons melted butter. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes.
Make classic baked macaroni and cheese by whisking 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour into 2 tablespoons melted butter and cooking in a skillet over medium-low heat for one minute. Add 2 cups warm milk, and stir until the mixture thickens before adding 1 cup shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese and 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper. Mix in 8 ounces cooked elbow macaroni, and pour into a baking dish. Top with more shredded cheese, and bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.Learn more about Cooking
