A good recipe for baked beans is Paula Dean's southern baked beans, which requires maple syrup, brown sugar, ketchup and lemon juice. Cans of pork and beans and bacon strips are also required.
In a Dutch oven, pour two cans of pork and beans, 3 tablespoons of yellow mustard, 1/4 cup of maple syrup, 1/4 cup of light brown sugar, 4 tablespoons of ketchup and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Dice one large onion, and add that to the pot. Mix everything together, add the lid, and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 45 to 60 minutes.
Another recipe requires green pepper, barbecue sauce and apple cider vinegar in addition to the other ingredients. First, fry eight slices of thick bacon over medium-low heat until the fat is melted but before the bacon turns crispy, and remove from heat. Dice up an onion and a green bell pepper and cook in the bacon grease over medium heat for a few minutes. Meanwhile, add 3/4 cup of barbecue sauce, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard. Whisk the ingredients together.
Back to the frying pan, add three cans of pork and beans to the pepper and onion mixture, and stir it. Add the sauce in the bowl to the pan. Bring the beans to a simmer, and pour immediately into a casserole dish. Layer the top of the baked beans with the bacon slices, and bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours.
