To make meat loaf with oatmeal, combine ground beef, chopped onion, tomato sauce, oatmeal, salt and pepper. Bake the finished meat loaf at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 hour.
To make old-fashioned meat loaf, combine 1 pound of ground beef, 1/4 cup oatmeal, 1 egg, 1 8-ounce can of diced tomatoes with the juice and 1/2 cup each of chopped onion and chopped bell pepper. Mix the ingredients together thoroughly, form into a loaf and place the loaf in a baking pan. Combine 1/3 cup of ketchup, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of mustard, and spread the mixture evenly over the top of the loaf. Bake the meat loaf at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 hour.
To make savory meat loaf, combine 1 1/2 pounds ground beef, 1/4 cup of ketchup, 1 egg, 3/4 cup of oatmeal, 1/2 teaspoon of crushed garlic, 2 tablespoons of grated onion, 3/4 cup of milk and 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Add 1/2 teaspoon of sage or thyme, salt and pepper to the mixture, and transfer the mixture to a baking dish after mixing. Bake the meat loaf at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 hour and 10 minutes, spread ketchup on top of the loaf and bake for an additional 20 to 30 minutes.
