A good Italian knot recipe is Italian Knot Cookies from Bon Appetit. The recipe calls for butter, sugar, eggs and flour with a simple powdered sugar icing containing anise extract.
Beat together 3/4 cup of melted butter and 3/4 cup of sugar until the ingredients for a fluffy, creamy texture, and then mix in 3 eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Sift together 4 cups of flour, 6 teaspoons of baking powder and 1 pinch of salt. Mix the flour mixture into the butter mixture, until dough forms. Tie pieces of dough into knots, and bake the cookies at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 to 20 minutes.
While the cookies bake, blend together 2 cups of powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, 1 pinch of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of anise extract. Instead of anise, 1 tablespoon of vanilla or lemon juice can be used. Ice the cooled cookies, and top them with sprinkles.
In order to make savory Italian garlic knots, mix together 3 chopped garlic cloves, 2 tablespoons of melted butter, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of chopped fresh basil and 1 teaspoon of chopped fresh parsley. Tie 1 can of refrigerated breadstick dough into knots, and arrange them in a baking dish. Brush the butter mixture on top of the knots, season them with salt and pepper, and bake them at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 13 to 15 minutes.
