Betty Crocker has a simple and easy-to-follow toffee recipe. It uses only five staple ingredients, and it receives 4.5 out of 5 stars from Betty Crocker users, as of June 2015.
To make Betty Crocker's toffee recipe, heat 1 cup sugar, 1 cup butter or margarine, and 1/4 cup water to boiling in a heavy 2-quart saucepan while stirring. Lower the heat to medium. Cook for 13 minutes while stirring until a candy thermometer reads 300 degrees Fahrenheit, or when a small amount of the mixture dropped into a cup of cold water separates into hard, brittle threads.
Watch the mixture to make sure it does not burn. Pour the mixture onto an ungreased cookie sheet immediately. Quickly spread the mixture to 1/4-inch thickness with a long spatula with a narrow metal blade. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips, and let sit for one minute or until the chips have completely softened. Spread the softened chocolate chips evenly over the toffee with the spatula.
Sprinkle evenly with 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans. Let the toffee stand at room temperature for one hour, or refrigerate until firm. Break up into bite sized pieces, or cut into desired pieces with a knife. Store in an airtight container.
