A good German sausage recipe is one for Bratwurst Stewed with sauerkraut created by Michael Symon from the Food Network, which serves between 8 and 10 people. This easy recipe takes 10 minutes to prepare and one hour and five minutes to cook. Symon originally presented this recipe on the television show "Melting Pot." The episode, titled "Eastern European Card Night," also included recipes for Eastern European Chile and Spinach and Smoked Salmon Cocktail Knishes.
Place 2 tablespoons oil in a large pan over high heat. Once the pan is hot, add 2 pounds of fresh bratwurst and cook until the pieces brown. Symon recommends getting the bratwurst from a butcher shop or checking with a grocery manager to ensure freshness.
Reduce the heat to medium. Add 2 chopped onions and 2 cloves of minced garlic, and let these ingredients caramelize lightly. Add 3 cups of chicken stock, 1 tablespoon of paprika and 1 tablespoon of caraway seeds into the pan. Finally, add 4 cups drained sauerkraut. Simmer for 45 minutes.
After removing the bratwurst and tangy sauerkraut from the heat, add 2 tablespoons of fresh dill. Bring a baguette to serve with or under the sausage and sauerkraut.
