A good fried bread recipe from the Food Network is Indian Fry Bread, which requires all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, warm water and oil. Another good recipe is the Indian Fry Bread and Indian Tacos from the Pioneer Woman website.
To make Indian Fry Bread, whisk together 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and then stir in 1 1/2 cups of warm water until the ingredients are just combined. Lightly knead out the dough on a floured surface. Cut the dough into round balls, and press them into flat 1/4-inch thick patties. Fry the dough patties in oil for a minute or two on each side.
Make the recipe from Pioneer Woman by combining 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 3 teaspoons of baking powder in a bowl and working in 3/4 cup of milk with a fork. Knead in just enough water for the dough to form into a ball, and allow it to rest covered for 35 to 45 minutes. Melt 2 inches of shortening in a skillet over medium-high heat, and add pieces of the dough flattened into 4- to 7-inch diameter circles. Fry the bread for one minute on each side, and serve the fry bread topped with ground beef, shredded lettuce and cheese.
