Food Network has simple and easy to follow recipes from two of its stars. Emeril Lagasse's cabbage recipe uses bacon and beer, while Ina Garten offers a healthier alternative.
To make Emeril Lagasse's recipe, cook 1/2 pound coarsely chopped bacon until browned and crispy for 5 minutes. Add 4 cups thinly sliced onion, 1 1/4 teaspoons salt, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon sugar and 3 bay laves. Cook while stirring for 5 minutes, or until the onions are tender. Add 1 cored and thinly sliced head of green or white cabbage, and stir to mix. Cook while stirring for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the cabbage begins to soften. Reduce the heat, and add 12 ounces of beer. Stir. Cover and simmer for 1 hour. Remove the bay leaves, and serve.
To make Ina Garten's recipe, core and slice 1 small head white cabbage. Melt 2 tablespoons unsalted butter in a saute pan over medium high heat. Add cabbage, 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt and 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper and saute for 10 to 15 minutes while stirring or until the cabbage is tender and starting to brown. Season to taste, and serve.
