Combine 1 pound of sweet Italian sausage, 3/4 pound of lean ground beef, 1/2 cup of minced onion and 2 cloves of crushed garlic in a pot, and cook over medium heat until browned. Stir in 1 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes, 2 6-ounce cans of tomato paste, 2 6.5-ounce cans of canned tomato sauce and 1/2 cup of water. For seasoning, add 2 tablespoons of white sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of dried basil leaves, 1/2 teaspoon of fennel seed and 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning to the meat sauce. Stir in 1 tablespoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper and 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley to finish seasoning. Cover and let simmer for one and a half hours, stirring occasionally.
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Bring a large pot of water to a boil, then add 12 lasagna noodles and let them cook for 8 to 10 minutes. Drain and rinse the noodles. Combine 16 ounces of ricotta cheese, 1 egg, 1/2 teaspoons of salt and 2 tablespoons of parsley in a bowl.
Spread 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9-inch by 13-inch pan. Place 6 noodles lengthwise on top of the sauce. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, then 1/4 pound of mozzarella. Add 1 1/2 cups of sauce over the mozzarella, then sprinkle 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. Repeat the layers, then top with mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake covered for 25 minutes, then bake uncovered for another 25 minutes. Allow the lasagna to sit for 15 minutes before serving.
