A good basic tomato sauce recipe consists of whole peeled tomatoes, olive oil, onion, garlic and a few other ingredients. This recipe takes 35 minutes to prepare and makes 6 cups of tomato sauce. It has a 5 star rating on the Food Network website.
To make the tomato sauce, the cook pours two 28-ounce cans of whole peeled tomatoes into a blender and blends until smooth. Now the cooks heats 1/4 cup of olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. When it is hot, she adds a large, finely chopped onion and sautés until it is tender or for about five minutes. Next, the cooks adds four cloves of finely chopped garlic and 1/8 teaspoon of red pepper flakes and cooks for about one minute.
Next, she pours in the blended tomatoes and brings the entire mixture to a boil. The cook then reduces the heat and lets the tomato mixture simmer for about 20 minutes. She then stirs in 1/4 cup of chopped fresh basil during the last minute of cooking. The tomato sauce is now ready.
The tomato sauce can be frozen for future use or used immediately. This sauce can be used as spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce or marinara sauce.
