Food Network has a simple and easy-to-follow baked apple French toast recipe that can be made with McIntosh or Granny Smith apples. The recipe also adds bananas for extra flavor.
To make Food Network's recipe, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Peel, core and cut 4 tart apples, such as McIntosh or Granny Smith, into 3/4-inch wedges. Toss with 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice. Peel 3 large ripe bananas and cut into 3/4-inch pieces. Add to the apples and sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon over top.
In a skillet, melt 3 tablespoons unsalted butter. Add the fruit and sauté for 30 seconds or until tender. Add 1/2 cup light brown sugar and 1 tablespoon maple syrup and cook for 30 seconds. Pour the mixture into a baking dish. In a separate bowl, combine 2 large eggs, 1/2 cup milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Dip 4 to 5 slices challah bread into the egg and place them over the fruit. Pour the leftover egg mixture over the bread, and let sit for 10 minutes.
Bake uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is golden. Let cool for five minutes and turn the baking dish over on a plate to remove the French toast.
