A simple fruit salad recipe includes berries, grapes, bananas and oranges. Seasonal fruits provide variety throughout the year and are easy to find in grocery stores and farmer's markets.
When preparing a fruit salad, select fruit already in season to avoid having to visit more than one grocery store or local market. Strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries add color, while red and green grapes, bananas and oranges add texture and flavor. In addition, seasonal fruit such as pineapple, honey dew, cantaloupe and watermelon also add color and flavor to a simple fruit salad.
Cut fruit into large chunks to create texture and visual interest. Create a simple marinade by adding honey, vanilla extract and peach or cherry pie filling to the fruit. Stir to combine and place in the refrigerator to chill.
Use canned, jarred or frozen fruit when fresh fruit is unavailable or combine with fresh fruit. After removing the fruit from cans and jars, wash the pieces to remove canning juices. Cut large pieces of fruit in half and combine to make a fruit salad. Fruit available in cans and jars include peaches, pears, pineapple and cherries. Allow frozen fruit such as blueberries, strawberries and melons to thaw completely before making the fruit salad.
