Two well-known fruits that grow naturally in the Amazon rainforest are passion fruit and cacao. Some other fruits found in the Amazon include camu camu, cupuaçu and mountain soursop.
The cacao bean is the base for chocolate. It was first encountered by Europeans in the 16th century when Spanish conquistadors explored South America. The cupuaçu is related to the cacao plant and has a similar flavor with a more fruity tone. Passion fruit is a versatile food whose juices are often used in desserts and as flavoring. The over 600 types of passion fruit include tart, purple fruits and sweet, yellow ones.
