Renowned Southern foods chef Paula Deen offers a country-style fried cabbage recipe on her website. The recipe takes 10 minutes to prepare and 15 minutes to cook. It's labeled an easy recipe that makes six servings.
The first step to making Paula Deen's country-style fried cabbage is to wash and shred one small head of green cabbage. To shred the cabbage, cut it into quarters, and remove the core. Use a sharp knife to make thin slices of each quarter.
Next, heat 3 tablespoons bacon fat in a Dutch oven. Add the shredded cabbage, and stir it to coat with the melted fat. Lower the heat, and add 2 teaspoons red pepper flakes, salt and pepper to taste. Cook the cabbage for 15 minutes or until it's tender, stirring to turn the slices.
A Deep South recipe for fried cabbage calls for more ingredients. First, chop three slices of bacon, and cook in a shallow pot until the fat renders. Add 2 tablespoons of butter and 1 cup chopped onion. Sauté for four minutes. Deglaze the bottom of the pan with a splash of water, and scrape the brown bits.
Add shredded cabbage to the pot, and season with salt, pepper and 1/4 teaspoon Cajun seasoning. Add 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar and a dash of red pepper flakes if desired. Cook until tender. If cooking a medium or large cabbage, cook it in two batches, adding more butter as necessary.
