To properly freeze squash, it must be cleaned and cooked briefly through a process known as blanching. Once the squash cools, package it and place it in the freezer.
Freeze squash with the following steps:
- Prepare the squash
- Freeze the squash
- Thaw when ready to eat
Wash the squash well before slicing and blanching. Once the squash has completed the blanching process, place it in ice water for 5 minutes and drain well.
Place the squash in air-tight freezer bags or containers. Properly stored squash can be kept in the freezer for up to 12 months.
Frozen squash thaws best in the refrigerator. Drain the excess water before cooking.
