While each of the 20 regions in Italy tend to create their own unique traditional meals, they all share some common ingredients such as pasta, cheeses and oils. A variety of fresh vegetables like eggplant and tomatoes are also common among most Italian cuisines.
Fresh greens are typically found on the dinner table in many Italian homes. The greens and fresh vegetables often are combined to create antipasto dishes. Myriad herbs and spices, including salt, basil, oregano, cumin and dill, are used by many people to help perk up dishes that are made in Italy.
When it comes to pizza, Italians are obviously no strangers, although the country’s version of pizza tends to be a lot simpler than the varieties that are popular in other parts of the world. It all started in Naples with a simple pizza called the Pizza Napoletana, which is nothing more than fresh crust, marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese.
Today, pizza in Italy is still made simply, and some don’t have anything more than olive oil and goat cheese on them. Pizza is often created with handmade dough, red sauce from freshly picked tomatoes, and bread fresh out of a piping hot oven or stone fireplace.
