Food security ensures the availability, accessibility and proper utilization of food. Food is a basic human need, yet according to the Food and Agriculture Association of the United Nations, around 805 million people were chronically undernourished from 2012 to 2014.
Although some people may have access to food, the food may not provide the necessary nutrients the body needs. Food supplies are also not stable in all areas. Food security looks to correct the problems that cause world hunger through a mix of programs by government and international organizations.
The U.S. State Department claims increased food security triggers a positive ripple effect across the world. Agricultural advancements not only help feed local communities, but also create new commercial markets. With these new markets comes more money for families to escape poverty.
