Flavors of Special K protein shakes include milk chocolate, strawberry, french vanilla, rich chocolate and strawberry banana. Additional flavors are chocolate mocha, vanilla cappucino and raspberry cheesecake, a dessert-inspired flavor.
Each protein shake flavor has 10 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber. Shakes come in resealable bottles for convenience. Kellogg, the company that manufactures Special K protein shakes, plans to make each flavor gluten free by the end of 2015.
Special K protein shakes are meal supplements designed to help people lose weight. The diet plan, created by Kellogg, encourages participants to replace two meals a day with low-fat, low-calorie Special K products. These products include Special K cereals, protein bars and protein shakes.
According to doctors on the Mayo Clinic website, replacing a couple of meals a day with a portion-controlled product may result in eating fewer calories because it takes the guesswork out of dieting. The website also points out that the Special K diet may cause problems in maintaining weight loss long term. Special K does not offer a wide range of nutritional options or teach participants the importance of exercise, which can be problematic in eating a varied diet and keeping the weight off.
