According to Mental Healthy, lunch is important because it provides nourishment to the body and brain and reduces stress. Eating lunch provides a break from the activities of the day and gives energy for the afternoon. Eating at regular intervals is also important for a healthy diet.

Mental Healthy describes a study in which it was found that one in four people do not take a break for lunch, and one in three people eat lunch at their work desk. They do so because they want to save time; however, taking a break to eat lunch keeps the brain active and helps with concentration throughout the latter part of the afternoon. If someone works in a stressful environment, a lunch break is an opportunity for him to step away and collect his thoughts; this helps prevent a build-up of stress and many health complications that arise from stress.

Not taking a break for lunch can elevate stress and thus increase cortisol, which leads to fat accumulation in the body, according to Mental Healthy. It can also lead to overeating; if someone does not take a break and eats while he works, he may be too distracted to realize what or how much he is eating.
