Eating cheese can potentially contribute to a gout flare and therefore is not recommended for people who have gout. Cheese and dairy products in general are high in saturated fat, which has been shown to interfere with the body's elimination of uric acid from the blood.
Gout is a painful arthritis caused by inflammation of large joints primarily due to an over-accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joint space. Factors that can contribute to a gout attack include a decreased ability of the body to clear the uric acid or an increased production of uric acid. Additional preventive measures include reducing alcohol consumption, staying well hydrated and avoiding foods high in purine content such as seafood, poultry and meats.
