Two easy white sauce recipes include Betty Crocker's white sauce and Mario Batali's Bechamel sauce. The recipes require a few basic ingredients, such as butter, milk, flour, salt and pepper. White sauce usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes to prepare.
To make Betty Crocker's white sauce, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over low heat. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 1/8 teaspoon of black pepper. Cook and stir over medium heat until the mixture is smooth and bubbly. Remove the pan from the heat, and slowly add 1 cup of milk. Return the pan to the heat, bring the sauce to a boil, and boil and stir for one minute.
Begin making Mario Batali's Bechamel sauce by melting 5 tablespoons of butter over medium-low heat. Stir in 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour until the mixture is smooth. Cook over medium heat for about six minutes, or until the mixture turns lightly golden. In a separate saucepan, heat 4 cups of milk until it is just ready to boil. One cup at a time, add the hot milk to the butter and flour mixture. Whisk constantly until the mixture is smooth, bring it to a boil, and cook and stir for 10 minutes. Season the sauce with 2 teaspoons of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg.
