To make an easy buttermilk ranch dressing, combine 1/2 cup of sour cream, 1/4 cup of mayonnaise, 1/2 cup of buttermilk, 2 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice and 1/4 cup of finely chopped chives in a medium bowl. Add 2 minced garlic cloves, 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 1/2 teaspoons of dried dill and salt to taste. If desired, add a few dashes of Tabasco sauce. Whisk the ingredients, and chill the finished dressing.
The recipe makes about 1 1/3 cups of ranch dressing and should stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to four days. Alternately, you can reduce the amount of garlic if you are preparing the dressing in advance because the garlic flavor intensifies over time.
Make another easy ranch dressing by whisking 1/2 cup of mayonnaise with 1/2 cup of well-shaken buttermilk in a small bowl. Using a mortar and pestle or the method of your choice, mash 1 garlic clove and 1 tablespoon of finely chopped onion with 1/8 teaspoon of sea salt to make a paste. Whisk the paste and 1/2 teaspoon of dry mustard into the mayonnaise mixture until well blended. Add 2 tablespoons of finely chopped chives, 1 tablespoon of finely chopped dill, 1 tablespoon of finely chopped flat-leaf parsley and 1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper. Whisk the ingredients well, and chill the mixture. The recipe makes about 1 cup of dressing.
