An easy icing can be made with milk, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract and cocoa powder. This icing is good in the fridge for days as long as it is stored in an airtight container.
Easy Chocolate Icing
This chocolate icing recipe creates a thick, sweet and fudgy frosting for cakes and other baked goods.
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Melt butter and add cocoa
- Add milk and vanilla
- Add powdered sugar
- Use or store for later
Melt the butter in the microwave. This should take less than a minute. Keep an eye on the butter and stop every 10 seconds or so to check on it. Add the cocoa powder to the melted butter and stir until well-mixed.
Whisk in the milk and vanilla. Keep whisking the mixture until it becomes slightly foamy on top.
Whisk in the powdered sugar a little at a time until it is all well mixed into the icing. The final result should be a thick, spreadable frosting.
Spread the icing on the baked item. If not using right away, place the icing into a tightly-sealed container and store in the fridge. When ready to use, whip the icing again to return it to a soft, spreadable state.
