An easy way to decorate a cake is to put store-bought meringues around the top edge of the frosted cake instead of piping on frosting rosettes. Another quick and simple decorating idea is to place large and small nonpareils in geometric patterns all over the top of the iced cake.
For a spiral design, line the edge of a cake top with sliced strawberries with their points toward the edge. Place the next ring inside the outer ring with the berries facing the same direction. The rings should overlap slightly. Continue in the same manner until the top is covered. Brush 1/4 cup of warm seedless raspberry jam over the strawberries.
For a candied lemon topping, put 3/4 cup each of water and sugar in a saucepan and boil, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Slice one lemon thinly, and drop the slices into the simmering sugar water. Cook for five to seven minutes. When done, the slices are tender and translucent. Remove the slices from the liquid, and let them cool on a rack. Place the lemon slices on the cake in an attractive arrangement.
Decorate a chocolate-frosted cake with rocky road topping. Break up two rolled sugar ice cream cones. Scatter the cone pieces, 1/4 cup of mini marshmallows and 1 tablespoon peanuts over the cake top. Drizzle 1 ounce of melted milk, bittersweet or semisweet chocolate over all.
