This easy Swedish meatball sauce recipe calls for unsalted butter, all-purpose flour, low-sodium beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, heavy cream, Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Optional ingredients include chopped fresh parsley as well as lingonberry jam.
To start, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Next, measure 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and add it to the melted butter, whisking well until it reaches a smooth consistency. Add 1 1/2 cups low-sodium beef broth and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce and bring the mixture up to a simmer. Finally, add 1/4 cup heavy cream as well as the cooked homemade meatballs and reduce the heat to medium low, allowing the sauce to thicken. This takes approximately 10 minutes. Season the sauce with both Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper and place the meatballs and sauce in a serving dish. If desired, top the dish with a sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley and serve with lingonberry jam as well as a preferred side dish.
This sauce accompanies approximately 45 meatballs and takes about 50 minutes to prepare and cook when taking the meatball preparation into account. The time is reduced when using ready-made frozen Swedish meatballs.
