Food Network and Martha Stewart provide easy recipes for sausage stuffing. One suggests using white and wheat bread, and the other suggest using cornbread for the stuffing.
The Food Network recipe requires frying 1 stick of butter, 3 cups of diced onions and 3 cups of diced celery over medium heat in a frying pan. Add 3 cups of sliced breakfast sausage and cook for approximately 10 minutes. Stir the ingredients frequently.
In a large bowl, break apart 25 slices of white and wheat bread. Add 1-1/2 teaspoons of poultry seasoning, salt, pepper and 3-1/2 cups of turkey stock or broth. Mix the ingredients, then add the sausage mixture and combine the ingredients again. Bake the ingredients at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes.
The Martha Stewart recipe includes 1 pound of cooked and strained sausage. Return the sausage to the pan, then add 1 finely chopped onion, 3 finely chopped celery hearts and 1/4 cup of water to the pan until the vegetables are tender. Add finely chopped sage, 3 lightly beaten eggs and cubed cornbread. Mix the ingredients and cook them at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until the ingredients are fully cooked. When stuffed inside a turkey, increase cooking time.
