Some easy recipes for a beginning cook are grilled cheese sandwiches and pan-seared, roasted steak. Some easy side dishes are baked potatoes and steamed broccoli.
To make a grilled cheese sandwich, put two slices of cheddar cheese between two slices of bread. Melt 1 tablespoon of salted butter in a pan over medium-low heat. Cook the sandwich in the pan until the bottom is golden, which takes three to five minutes. Add more butter if necessary, and turn the sandwich so the other side is on the bottom. Cook until the cheese is melted.
Restaurants often cook steak by first searing it in a pan to seal the juices inside then roasting it in the oven. Heat a pan on high heat until it's hot. Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in the pan, then place the steak in the pan, and cook for 90 seconds, turn it, and cook for another 90 seconds. Put the steak and juices in an oven-safe pan, and cook it in an oven preheated to 450 F for six to nine minutes until it is done.
Bake a russet potato by placing it in an oven at 400 F for one hour.
For steamed broccoli, cut crosswise through the stem of a head of fresh broccoli to separate it from the crown. Cut the florets crosswise to separate them into pieces. Slice the stem, removing any leaves and discarding the tough end.
Boil some water in a pot, then place a steamer basket on top of it. Pour out excess water so that it does not touch the steamer. Place the broccoli in the steamer, cover, and cook on medium-high heat for four to five minutes until it is tender enough. Season with lemon juice, butter, or salt and pepper.
