A basic turkey stuffing recipe consists of bacon, bread cubes, celery, onions and a few additional ingredients. This recipe takes 45 minutes to prepare and can stuff a 12- to 14-pound turkey.
To make the stuffing, fry 1/4 to 1/2 pound of bacon in a frying pan. Crumble the bacon and place on a plate for later. Add 3/4 cup of butter to the bacon grease and let it melt. Next, add 3 stalks of chopped celery, 2 chopped medium onions and 2 tablespoons of minced garlic. Cook until the vegetables are tender. After this, add in 7 cups of bread cubes to the butter, and stir until the cubes are evenly coated.
Now, add in the additional 7 cups of bread cubes, 2 teaspoons of salt and pepper, and 2 teaspoons of poultry seasoning, and mix well. Add the bacon back in as well as 1 1/4 cup of dried cranberries and combine with the other ingredients. Pour 1 cup of chicken broth over all of the ingredients, but do not add too much or the bread will become too soft. Stuff the turkey immediately, and cook according to package directions. This stuffing can also be baked in a casserole dish for about 30 minutes if you don't wish to stuff it in the turkey.
