Cream 1 cup of the sugar and the butter in a large bowl until it is fluffy and light. Beat in the vanilla and the egg.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cream of tartar and baking soda.
Gradually add the dry mixture to the original mixture. Blend well.
Combine remaining sugar and cinnamon.
Shape the dough into 1-inch balls, and then roll the balls in the mixture of cinnamon and sugar.
Place the cookies onto ungreased baking sheets two inches apart. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in a 375 degree oven. Cool on wire racks.
