For a simple puppy chow recipe, melt together chocolate chips, butter and peanut butter to pour over Chex cereal. The coated cereal goes into a bag where it is tossed with powdered sugar.
The puppy chow recipe allows for any variety of Chex cereal such as wheat, corn or chocolate varieties. A recipe with 18 servings requires about 9 cups of Chex cereal. Measure the cereal ahead of time and place it in a bowl so it is ready when the chocolate melts.
The recipe calls for 1 cup of chocolate chips, 1/2 cup of peanut butter and 1/4 cup of butter. Melt the ingredients in the microwave or on the stove top. In the microwave, heat for 1 minute and stir. Continue microwaving in 30 second increments until the ingredients are melted and smooth. On the stove top, stir the mixture constantly over low heat until it is melted.
Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the melted chocolate if desired. Pour the mixture over the cereal. Stir the mixture carefully to distribute the chocolate without crushing the cereal pieces. Toss the cereal in a bag with 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar so the pieces are individually covered. Spread the pieces on wax paper so they cool and the chocolate sets.
