Food Network has a simple and easy-to-follow recipe for donuts flavored with sugar and nutmeg. This recipe makes 20 to 25 doughnuts and takes 2 1/2 hours to prepare and cook.
To make Food Network's recipe, heat 1 1/2 cups milk until warm. Pour over 2 1/2 ounces vegetable shortening and set aside.
In a bowl, sprinkle 2 packages instant yeast in 1/3 cup warm water and let dissolve. Pour the yeast mixture into a stand mixer. Add the milk mixture, 2 beaten eggs, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, 1 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg and 11 1/2 ounces flour. Combine on low until the flour is incorporated and then combine on medium.
Add 11 1/2 ounces flour and mix well. Continue mixing for three to four minutes and then transfer to a greased bowl. Let rise for one hour, or until the dough doubles in size.
On a floured surface, roll out the dough to 3/8-inch thick. Cut out the dough using a doughnut cutter and let rise for 30 minutes. Preheat the oil to 365 degrees F and place three to four doughnuts in the oil. Cook for one minute on each side and then move to a cooling rack. Let cool for 15 to 20 minutes.
