Meatloaf is a dish with a ground beef base mixed with eggs, milk and breadcrumbs to hold the loaf together. Common seasonings include ketchup and onion.
This recipe for a basic meatloaf was originally published by Betty Crocker. The ketchup in the recipe can easily be substituted for canned diced tomatoes for a savory touch.
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 1 hour
Ready in: 1 hour and 20 minutes
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup chopped onion
- Although the original recipe instructs cooks to bake the meatloaf in an ungreased loaf pan, many reviewers recommend greasing the pan beforehand. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
- Mix all ingredients together until everything is completely blended.
- Add the mixture to the loaf pan. Press the loaf evenly into the pan.
- Bake the meatloaf in the preheated oven for 60 minutes.
Brush 1/4 cup ketchup or a mixture of ketchup, brown sugar and mustard onto the loaf before baking to add some extra flavor. Other ingredients can be added to the loaf to spice up the flavor. For example, Paula Deen's recipe for meatloaf includes 1/2 cup chopped bell peppers.
