Basic homemade ice cream blends cream, milk, sugar and vanilla. Although many ice cream recipes involve cooking the ingredients, there are also plenty of easy no-cook recipes available.
Vanilla Ice Cream
This recipe was originally featured on "The Essence of Emeril" show on Food Network. It is easy to make and customize, but cooks must have access to an ice cream machine to complete the recipe.

- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup sugar
- One pinch of salt
- Mix all of the ingredients together until they are thoroughly blended.
- Add the mixture to the ice cream maker bowl, and put it in the freezer or operate the machine as directed. The ice cream maker should have manufacturer's instructions informing users on how to use the machine. Heed these instructions.
- To store extra ice cream, put it in an airtight container and keep it in the freezer.
Cooks can add ingredients to make different flavors of ice cream. Options include substituting the whole milk and sugar for chocolate milk and chocolate syrup, or adding sliced almonds, caramel sauce, chocolate chips, fresh mint or strawberries.
