In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Remove it from the heat, and stir in 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Whisk the hot water mixture into the ingredients in the bowl until just blended. Add the batter to a lightly buttered 9-by-13-inch cake pan. Bake the cake in an oven at 375 degree Fahrenheit for 45 minutes, or until a tooth pick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool on a rack before serving it with ice cream or whipped cream.
