To make a German chocolate cake, prepare a package of brownie mix according to package instructions for cake-like brownies. Pour the batter into a baking pan. Cook 1/4 cup of butter and 4 ounces of cream cheese on medium heat until well blended.
Stir in 1/3 cup of brown sugar and add 1 cup of coconut flakes and 1 cup of pecan pieces. Mix well and drop spoonfuls of the mixture over the brownie batter. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees F and let cool for one hour.
To make a German potato salad, boil 2 pounds of Yukon gold potatoes in salted water for 15 to 20 minutes. Drain and slice the potatoes into 1/4-inch slices. Cook 1/2 pound of bacon over medium-high heat until crisp. Drain on paper towels and crumble into pieces.
Pour off all but 1/4 cup of bacon fat from the pan, turn the heat to medium and add 3/4 cup of chopped onion. Cook for four to five minutes and whisk in 1/3 cup of vinegar, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir until bubbly and toss in the potatoes.
