Two easy French food recipes that are easy for kids to make are French meringues and riz au lait, or French-style rice pudding. An adult should help kids cook these recipes.
To make French meringues, preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and then place the four egg whites in a glass or metal bowl. Allow them to get to room temperature, and then using a mixer, begin beating the egg whites. When the egg whites begin to thicken, add 1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar, and while still mixing, gradually pour in a cup of superfine sugar. It could take up to 15 minutes until the eggs become stiff, glossy and ready to place on parchment paper.
Use a spoon to form cookies, place in the oven and bake for 1 1/2 hours, and then turn off the oven, and allow the meringues to dry for several hours. When completely dry, lift them off the parchment paper.
To make the rice pudding, boil a large pot of water, pour in 1 1/4 cup of pearl rice and boil for two minutes. In the meantime, pour 4 cups of milk into a pot and place on medium heat. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon of salt and allow to simmer. Drain the rice, and put it into the milk and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in 1/3 cup of sugar, cook for five minutes, remove from the heat and stir in a teaspoon of vanilla before placing in serving cups.
