A popular imitation recipe for Cracker Barrel's hash brown casserole is made by mixing together a 26-ounce package of frozen hash browns, 2 cups of shredded Colby cheese and 1/4 cup of chopped onions in a large bowl. Prepare an oven by preheating it to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
In a separate bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of beef broth, 1 cup of milk and 1 tablespoon of melted butter with small amounts of garlic powder, salt and pepper. Pour the liquid into the bowl with the cheese, onions and hash browns, and mix well.
In a large, oven-proof skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter on the stove. Cook the hash brown mixture in the butter over high heat until the cheese is melted and it is heated through. This should take about seven minutes. Place the skillet into the preheated oven, and bake for 45 to 60 minutes or until the hash browns appear dark brown. As a side dish, the recipe serves four to six people.
Shredded cheddar cheese can be substituted if Colby is not available. As an alternative to an oven-proof skillet, the mixture can be put into a casserole dish and cooked in the microwave until it is hot and the cheese is melted. It can then be placed in the oven to finish cooking.
