Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Inc. Flavor Graveyard lists Wild Maine Blueberry, Miz Jelena’s Sweet Potato Pie, Wavy Gravy and 32 other discontinued ice cream products, as of 2015. However, this is not a complete list of the company’s obsolete flavors as evidenced by Archive.org’s Way Back Machine showing over 60 flavors in the Flavor Graveyard in 1997.
When it began in 1997, Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Graveyard was simply a list of discontinued ice cream flavors. Even more modest recipes such as cinnamon, French vanilla and raspberry made the 1997 Flavor Graveyard version. As the list morphed into a physical cemetery-like location behind the Ben & Jerry’s factory, the company pared down the number of included flavors. As of 2015, it pays homage only to those flavors that are in keeping with its flamboyant reputation.
Although lack of sales stopped the production of many flavors, others succumbed to cost prohibitive ingredients such as White Russian’s Kahlua-like flavoring. The first flavors metaphorically buried in the Flavor Graveyard were Dastardly Mash, Economic Crunch, Ethan Almond and Tuskegee Chunk. Ben & Jerry’s provides each flavor in the cemetery with a tombstone and catchy epitaph. The company is systematically replacing the original resin tombstones with granite, as of 2015.
