According to Kids Health, the pyramid is broken up into food categories and explains how much of each food a person should eat throughout the day. The food pyramid is typically made up of rainbow colored stripes of different widths that represented the quantity allowed for each food group. The food groups are protein, fruit, vegetables, grains and oils.
