Full Answer

There is a difference in the types of sugar in a date depending largely on how dry the date is. For instance, soft dates have a higher proportion of glucose and fructose, or simple sugars, while the flesh of dry dates is sometimes almost 80 percent sucrose, or table sugar. With such a high sugar content, dates have approximately 1,430 calories per pound. Presently grown throughout the Middle East and some areas of California, date palms are thought to have been cultivated as early as 6000 B.C. in Egypt and Mesopotamia.
