India is the country that grows and exports the most bananas annually. India supplies one third of the world with bananas, producing around 11 million tons of bananas per year.
China and Uganda follow India as the other two countries with the most banana production. In some countries, bananas and plantains are considered different foods, but India does not differentiate between bananas and plantains.
Banana bunches are harvested by hand in India and both men and women work the fields. In developing countries, green bananas are used for cooking where it is boiled or fried. In the United States, bananas are often eaten raw.
