The majority of coconuts come from Indonesia. Other large exporters are the Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Thailand, Vietnam and Mexico. Coconuts are grown in Hawaii, but the output is small compared with other regions.
Coconuts grow best in sandy soils. They also require plenty of sunlight and frequent rain. Approximately 55 tons of coconuts are produced worldwide every year. As derivative products such as coconut oil and coconut water have become popular, production has grown.
Coconuts are high in vitamin B5, iron, phosphorus and zinc. However, they are also high in calories compared to other fruits. They contain high levels of fat.
