Costco is not open on six major holidays in the United States including Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Though there are always last minute shoppers around the holidays Costco understands that their employees have families too, and as such they are not open on days like Thanksgiving, even though other grocery retailers often are.
Costco is a large retail warehouse club that is membership-based, meaning that without a membership, a person cannot shop at the store. The current company is a result of a 1993 merger between Price Club, which was first developed in 1976 in San Diego, CA, and Costco, which first opened in 1983 in Seattle, WA. Initially both companies catered to businesses only, but soon a select number of non-business members were invited to join, leading to massive sales growth. As of 2014, recent sales for Costco stores total nearly $64 billion worldwide.
