Cook sweet potatoes by baking, roasting or boiling them, or cook them more quickly in the microwave. Sweet potatoes are delicious when cooked alone or when added to baked vegetable dishes, stews, soups, curries or pastas.
To prepare a sweet potato for boiling, first scrub the skin thoroughly and remove any fibrous growths. Cut the potato evenly into pieces. Bring a pot of water to a boil, and add the sweet potato. Cook for about 20 minutes or until tender.
To bake sweet potatoes, preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Clean the sweet potatoes, and pierce the skin multiple times with a fork. Bake the potatoes for about 45 minutes to one hour, depending on their size. To cook a large sweet potato in the microwave, prepare it in the same way, and cook on full power for approximately eight to ten minutes.
To prepare roasted sweet potatoes, preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Meanwhile, bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Cut the sweet potatoes to the desired size, and parboil them for five minutes. Pour 5 ounces of olive oil into a roasting pan, and preheat it in the oven for five minutes. Drain the sweet potatoes, and place them in the pan. Roast for 30 to 45 minutes or until the potatoes are golden and crunchy.
